Sorrow is Not Sorrow
Sorrow is not sorrow
Sorrow is not sorrow
Sorrow is not evidence in a case against you
Sorrow is what happens
Sorrow is what happens
To a heart that loves
And not loving at all
Is the greatest sorrow
The lesser sorrows
The lesser sorrows
Are all bearable
The greatest sorrow is not
Sorrow is not sorrow
Sorrow is not pain
Sorrow is not evidence in a case against you
Sorrow is the evidence of our capacity to love
Sorrow is not sorrow
Sorrow is not hate
Sorrow is not sorrow
It’s only your heart telling you you’re alive
You’re still alive

Sweet Longing

O Sweet Longing, yes I know you’re here
O Sweet Longing, how I wish you’d disappear
But you won’t ever leave my side
No you won't ever leave my side
O Sweet Longing, trial by fire tonight
O Sweet Longing, make me swallow my pride
And the hallow place is where I must make my home
With the thorns and tides, where the wildness lives, go I
Where the air is still and my mind wields fang and claw
Longing sticks like ligaments on bones
Longing you reveal just like a poem
You tear at me, disturb all that is known

Crown of Daisies
The self is the least of it
Let our scars fall in love
It might be they have poetry
The envy of Percy and Rumi
Brazen as shards of light
That dash decisive from slate skies
Clashing to illuminate the vastness
Under shadows and confinement
Saying yes to friction that tears open and pours
I exclaim over the hills and valleys
Hear me, no longer do I cower unassuming
Flocking amid faceless crowds
Hope never to be chosen
Never to be chosen last
Some invisible daisy among multitudes
Perhaps plucked and woven into a garland crown
For a sweet child’s head
Until her fancy draws her onward
Discarded crown, rotting on the ground
This no longer suffices, no
This body to be held, lithe and sinewed
Bloated and cut, naked and pumping
A breath deep and full, rounded
Like the silver moon, shining in the darkness
Cycling around to meet dawn
And meeting the fiery source
This body heavenly, proud, humbled wants the same
Wearing scars like crowns of daisies, bright
Inviting you to do the same
To rejoice, not in what separates
Rejoice in what we all must claim
Or be claimed by
